Lara herself has become a celebrity figure and has achieved unparalleled status as an icon for both the industry and the digital age. Her popularity has grown, almost exponentially, over the course of the top-selling titles. Described as a 'virtual idol', 'the first true supermodel of the cyber age', and 'Britain's ambassador for scientific excellence', Lara has also taken the mainstream by storm. Her image has graced hundreds of magazine covers worldwide and she has featured in a vast range of articles from current affairs to fashion. Douglas Coupland has dedicated a book to her (Lara's book) and she was nominated as one of Time's Top 20 most influential figures of the 20th Century. With comic books, action figures, clothing ranges and a live-action feature film underway (Paramount Pictures), she has become a sought after product spokesperson. To date Lara has helped to advertise the Sci-Fi Channel and has also appeared in television advertising campaigns for SEAT cars and Lucozade Energy. Tomb Raider was the first video game to feature a female protagonist: the player assumes the role of infamous adventurer Lara Croft. Lara is an enterprising, independent character who must be guided through a series of turbulent exploits across the globe, following in the tradition of action movie characters such as 'Indiana Jones'.
